Taking photographs in India
if I had to put my finger on one big difference taking photos in India it would be how hard it can be to find a clear background. In rural areas this is less of an issue. In urban areas, part of India’s charm (chaotic cabling, a visual cacophony of colours, a disagreement with Western ideals for street furniture) is also what makes for a complicated background.
Complicated backgrounds lead to the eye jumping around the image.
Solutions?
Try filling the frame to reduce the visual noise.
or make the chaos an integral part of an environmental image.
Or focus on what seems different. For example, there’s always washing and clothings in lines in cities.
I like to focus on the concept of finding personal items hanging on things like electrical wires in very urban cityscapes. Perhaps the biggest tip is to be aware what’s behind your subject. And celebrate it.
