The Shimmering Sands Photography Holiday includes Jaisalmer, Jaipur and the Pushkar Camel Fair. We meet in Delhi and travel from there to absorb the sights and sounds of Rajasthan.
Jaisalmer was on a tributary of the Silk Route, and is the most amazing desert citadel, a sandstone fort rising out of the shimmering sands of the Thar Desert. Left behind when the trade routes shifted, the city fort has extraordinary carved sandstone screens, wonderful family-owned havelis (merchant houses) and a lifetime of stories. The photography tour moves onto the Pink City, beautiful Jaipur, a chaotic fusion of old and new India, with artisan traditions of painting in miniature, precious stone cutting and hand-block printing. The last three days are spent at Pushkar, for the annual camel and horse fair. Big turbans. Dust. Amazing light. I've been travelling and working in India for 25 years and every time I go back, the experience is both humbling and rewarding. Let me show you the insider's India.
